Graduate Stories: Jack Beeston, Assistant Marketing Manager

We've been chatting with graduates in our network to find out how they landed their current marketing jobs and it's been fascinating to read their stories. It's so true that there is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to a career in marketing and each journey seems to be completely different. Jack Beeston graduated from the University of Bedfordshire in 2015 and is now working as an Assistant Marketing Manager for leading textiles manufacturer in hair containment, Aburnet. Prior to this, Jack worked in broadcasting, radio and social media, and we were lucky enough to speak to him this week about his post-graduate journey. Check it out:

 

How did you get into marketing in the first place?

Having built up a range of experience during my time at university and whilst chasing my “dream job,” I saw an opening for a part-time social media and marketing assistant which required journalistic qualities. After enjoying the role and realising that this was the career I wanted to follow, I was then recommended to another nearby company as a marketing advisor to their team. The rest, they say, is history and I progressed from there. What I've taken from my experience is that you never know what any opening could lead to, no matter how small or how minimal the pay.

 

Did your university degree/experience help you when it came to your first marketing job?

It helped me a great deal. As I studied a journalism-based degree, this gave employers the confidence that I could write effective copy. My experiences at university gave me subjects to talk about passionately, which employers love to see during the interview process. Personally, the fact I managed the community radio station at the university gave me a lot of material and proved I could manage people, time and promote the station effectively.

 

How did you identify which area of marketing you wanted to get into?

I knew I wanted to get involved in the communications and public relations side of things, but as things develop, you will always end up wearing different marketing hats. For instance, I had a lot to learn about digital marketing but because there was a need for it in the company I worked for, I learned and now I enjoy that side equally as much, especially with the constant changes that are happening.

 

Is there anything you’d have done differently starting out in your career?

I would have explored my options more. Initially, I was offered a job at an agency which at that time wasn’t the right company for me. But what I wish I'd have done is knock on other agency doors to see how their businesses worked and to see if agency-side could have been a fit for me.

 

What advice do you have for graduates looking to get into marketing?

My top advice for graduates looking to get into marketing would be to:

  • Really know the industry, gain experience in both B2C and B2B and don’t pigeonhole yourself into a niche.
  • Practice writing press releases
  • Perfect your own social media sites.
  • Offer to do marketing for a community organisation or a friend.
  • Learn to write in different styles.

 

What advice would you give graduates who are currently searching for their first marketing job?

A mistake I often made was that I was never ballsy enough. There doesn’t always have to be a job advert if you think you can offer somebody something. Offer to do some work experience to make them feel that they need you. Gain as much knowledge as you can and really know what you're talking about. Most importantly have evidence to back up your claims. If on your CV you say you can write press releases, have an example prepared.

 

If you could give your post-graduate-self any piece of advice, what would it be knowing what you now know about the industry?

Always remember to market yourself. You are always selling you. Be confident in your ability and have evidence of what you can do.
