What Is The Meaning Of Life?

Meaning of life

Sounds like a deep question, but have you ever thought about this? There is so much written about purpose, and why people choose the career paths they take and then we thought, what about all the humans stuck in jobs they hate, questioning themselves and where they're going? It's human nature to look into and analyse ourselves. How often do you look at the bigger picture? It's so easy to get caught up in the little bubble of your life, but what if we had a bit more perspective? What is it that really matters to people? We thought we'd ask some of our colleagues and friends what they think the meaning of life is and this is what they came up with:

Ok, so I think the meaning of life in its most literal sense, across all living things on the most basic level is to reproduce, carry on your species and survive. But as humans, we're really good at that already. So we've had to invent new, more difficult things to aspire to like find a purpose, find happiness, be successful and leave a legacy behind so your grandkids' grandkids can shop at Waitrose. I reckon Bob Marley said it best though "don't worry, be happy." - Andre Mclean

The meaning of life for me is definitely surrounding yourself by people you love who you love in return! I also feel like the meaning of life means living for yourself and doing everything that makes you happy, never passing off an opportunity to achieve your goals and always ticking something off the bucket list - Madyson Hope

I think you need to understand who you are and not be forcefully dragged along with the motions of life. “You must have a mortgage by 28”, “You must have children”, “You must do this”, “you must do that.” Everyone has a different path in life so you just need to do you but ultimately it all boils down to money, unfortunately. If we take money out the equation, I think everyone would be happy and there would be no evil in the world. To have good health and eternal happiness is the most important thing of all. Don’t worry, be happy and sell coconuts in Sri Lanka. - James Morris

I think the meaning of life is what you make it. Life is life and no one, not anyone, will ever ever know the true meaning of it which really freaks me out! So you just have to take each day as it comes and live it how you want to. If you're in a job you hate….then leave…who cares? If you’re in a  toxic friendship or relationship…just leave…simple! You’re gonna die in 80 years anyway so die happy! - Ashling Barry

Life has no intrinsic meaning, the entire human species is insignificant, without purpose and unlikely to change in the totality of existence. Each individual is an isolated being born into the universe, barred from knowing "why", yet compelled to invent meaning when there is none. - Geoff Andress

What about if there is no actual meaning? What if we are just apart of some intergalactic reality TV show!!? What if a superior being in outer space has actually created life on earth and we are just part of some experiment and our every day lives are being monitored from another planet or universe. The aliens could be purposely be creating natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis in order to monitor how we deal with and react to them. - Craig Taylor

So I don't think there's a meaning of life as such or a reason why we're all here. I think we all need to find a purpose/reason to live which informs our values and I think it's more about living a fulfilling life and that becomes our meaning. You make your own meaning...and I think it's really hard to motivate yourself if you don't have a purpose or you're not living what you think your purpose is. - Fran Suffling

I think the meaning of life is totally subjective and different to everyone. Ultimately doing what makes you happy will give you purpose and in that you'll get the most from life. For some people this may be travel, others might put more value on career success. For me it's all about relationships and connections both with yourself and with others. - Jess Horn

I think the meaning of life is all about learning, gaining experiences and understanding the consequences of our actions and then we die. - Grant Bristow

I'm not sure I believe in the fact that we are all here for a reason, because what is that reason? I think we have to create our own meaning of life and that is built on our experiences, relationships and environment. For instance, I value connection and relationships above all else. We create our own meaning because, really, there isn't any meaning. It's just science and the rest is up to us. - Sophie Fletcher

Those who are unhappy and have not achieved what they wanted in life will have a pessimistic answer, but I consider myself optimistic and want to make the most of what life brings. If you don’t you are just ‘living’ and there really is no meaning to life. For me life is to enjoy. I’m slightly selfish and don’t believe in saving ‘our plant’ for our decedents, we’ve adapted and I’m sure they will too! Evolution and all that malarkey. I think everyone should learn as much as they can, travel and share what they see and the knowledge they gain.  From the moment we are born we grow and develop. Our skills and interests are nurtured, and we are encouraged to have ambitions and have dreams. Everyone's are different, but achieving them contributes to how happy we are in life and the path we take. My answer is a little ambiguous, but in a nutshell, I think the meaning of life is to do what you want. You’re in charge of your own life and your own happiness. - Melissa Morgan

I get a bit freaked out if I think too much about it! I think you just have to figure out your own meaning based on your values. I think that if there was one common meaning the world would be a much more peaceful place. - Catherine Murphy

I think people have a need to do something incredible with their lives, to be famous or remembered, because we are all worried we'll just be forgotten which I think links to this idea of having no purpose. People need to feel they are having an impact that's wider than their day-to-day. - Holly Lehman

Be happy and appreciative that you are specifically you and not a permutation of someone else. What are the chances of you even existing? It had to be that one specific sperm of your fathers 12 trillion with half of your DNA that one of a trillion that collided with one of your mothers thousands of eggs with the other half of your name on it. And that is just to create you. We have to multiply those odds of that happening, to your parents and their parents and the long list of all of your ancestors and follow that timeline all the way back to the first single cell organism 7 billion years ago. You are at one end of your perfect unbroken chain. Those odds of even existing are astronomically small and this is the one life that we have. So we can be kinder to ourselves when we tell ourselves that we are overweight or we envy other people. And be kinder to others around us. We are in control of our own stories that we tell ourselves. Tell yourself a nicer story.  - Tim Holl

Ok so this is very broad, but I think it’s to help people – ultimately, whatever we learn, we learn in order to pass on to people or to provide a service, on some level. Plus people tend to feel really good when they help people – helping someone naturally releases happy hormones, so logically it’s something that is built into us to do. Everything else we do sort of fits under that umbrella of service. - Nicole Gray

So I was at a funeral today and it got me really thinking. The lady who died was very much loved. She was a dear friend, an amazing mother and a wonderful teacher. She dedicated her life to other people and in return life gave her a unique, untreatable form of cancer. At the end of the day, at the end of it all, on that one day the meaning of your life is what your life meant to other people. No matter how big or small we all influence change and impact people's lives. We may treat them well and touch them in some way or we may not be a positive impact at all. Every action we take has a series of consequences that may not mean anything to anyone at the time but when that life is over, that action, that consequence meant several things to several people even if we never knew them. If you have not impacted a single soul's life what was the meaning of yours? - Kat Ratcliffe

Finding genuine personal self-worth! To be at the point where you’re actually more focused on improving the lives of others rather than your own. You’ve then allowed yourself to be the best you can be. Something only you can truly value! - Jamie Barnes

To answer  " what is the meaning of life" , first of all we have to understand the question, which presently and historically, the human race has no concept of what that question actually means. - Lee Bacco

The meaning of life is to find your own meaning for life. - Krish Maharaj

The meaning of life is to love and have fun. - Andrew Hillery

The meaning of life for me is purely to exist. To provide joy and happiness to others. Be kind and polite and each day try to improve as a person in any way possible. Enjoy your time because you never know when it will end. Here for a good time not a long time, so enjoy the ride and allow others to enjoy it with you if they wish. - Christian Calzone

There are two simple meanings in my opinion. The first is to be in love. It's a known fact that we are designed to be around people, our emotional state is terrible if we are isolated and alone; family, friends, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband or wife...there is a lot of love to give and to be gained. Love ties nicely into my second and most important meaning. To be happy, and to be happy at every possible opportunity. For some people that means a career or money, for others it means to travel or have a family. Ultimately the reason behind your happiness doesn't necessarily matter. As long as we are happy then who really gives a f*ck about anything else. - Taylor Fitzhugh

Where do I start? What is the meaning of life… I mean, we only have one shot at living life so why do something we don’t enjoy doing and why do would you continuously do something that does not make us happy? We work from Monday to Friday, nearly 50 hours per week. If we do not enjoy what we are doing, why bother staying and being unhappy when we can find something else that would make us get up early in the morning and actually looking forward to going to work. Life is too short. We've got to find a workplace where we can truly enjoy and express ourselves. Why don't we just enjoy life and live the adventure whilst we can still do that, instead of hating ourselves and feeling stuck in a place where we can't achieve happiness. - Jeffrey Leung

Asking this question and finding out what people really think has been really enlightening and it has certainly sparked a few interesting conversations in the office this week. Jeffrey's answer at the end certainly hits the nail on the head in terms of work and the impact that it has on our lives. Feeling negatively towards your job can have a detrimental impact to the quality of the life that you live. We spend so much time at work that it's really important to make sure that we are doing something we enjoy in an environment that truly suits us. If some of these answers to the meaning of life have inspired you to make a change and find a new job, you've got to do it! At the end of the day, whatever reservations you might have...who cares? In the grand scheme of things, those reservations mean nothing. You'll never learn anything, progress or develop in life if you don't at least try something new. Make that change today!
