What Do Marketing Job Titles Actually Mean?
We’ve all been there – you have updated your CV, you have written an excellent personal statement, and you settle down at your laptop (or PC, we don’t discriminate) to your job search site of choice (onlymarketingjobs, anyone?) and get ready to begin The Job Hunt.
But hang on, what on earth is a ‘Wizard of Lightbulb Moments’? What does a ‘Digital Dynamo’ actually do?
We are here to dissect the many marketing and digital job titles you may see as you begin your job hunt. While we aren’t ever going to play you like that (we have someone checking all of our job titles and listings before they are posted on the site!), we understand that there are a lot of roles out there, and we are here to help you sort through the good, the bad, and the ugly.
So, without further ado, here is the only A-Z you’ll ever need.
The A-Z of Marketing and Digital Job Titles:
This one is more of a sales role than a marketing one – your day might involve presenting campaign ideas and costings to clients, managing the account and briefing the creative team on the client’s needs.

A more senior version of the Account Executive. In this role, you might manage a portfolio of accounts, manage numerous project and attend client meetings. Key focus on maintaining strong and lasting relationships with clients.

This job calls for a number of skills, from research, to design. Ona day to day basis, you might be monitoring market trends, meeting with clients & various departments, overseeing a team and organizing events & campaigns.

A Campaign Manager works with external agencies to execute campaigns, then measure and report on the effectiveness of said campaigns. Involves B2B and/or B2C marketing, campaign tracking, budget handling, copywriting and editing, KPI evaluation… Big job!

Usually serves as a liaison between an organisation and different target audiences (customers, the press, investors…) Requires strong written and verbal skills to effectively communicate the desired message, as well as experience handling a team of people.

Creative Designer
Required to develop design briefs for clients, as well as presenting the final ideas. Works with a range of media and technology, and must work well as part of a larger team. Often handles a number of design briefs at any given time.

Customer Relation Management (CRM) Manager
Oversees direct communications with customers through the dedicated channels, plans and delivers CRM strategies with the goal of encouraging customer loyalty and retention.

Digital Analyst
This role is effectively using data to help solve problems within an organisation. This role suits people who are naturally inquisitive and analytical – without someone to translate its meaning, data is fairly meaningless!

Digital Communications Manager
Responsible for the strategic design, implementation and the management of a range of online (and offline!) communication strategies, looking to target media and industry engagement.

Creates and delivers a range of cross-platform digital work – anything from emails, responsive sites, banners or mobile apps, to microsites. Works closely with the Creative, UX and Developer Teams.

Digital Product Manager
A Digital Product Manager develops and launches new online products. By understanding current trends and market data, you would develop a strategy to market to targeted customer groups.

Ecommerce Manager
Oversees a team of designers and marketers, and is responsible for all online activities. Might include organising promotions, working with advertising, maintaining a website and developing and implementing an ecommerce strategy.

Event Producer
Another role that does not consist entirely of marketing – Event Producers supervise and coordinate all aspects of an event, from start to finish. This is a management position, overseeing large numbers of staff across a variety of departments.

Front-End Developer
A Front-End Developer is responsible for implementing visual elements that users see and interact with on a website. Might use a combination of HTML, CCS, JavaScript, and the key focus is tailoring the user experience.

This is a senior role, ideal for someone with experience across digital channels, strategy, digital proposition and digital tech. You would be working with clients, as well as nurturing and managing a team.

Insight Analyst
Also referred to, more creatively, as a ‘Data Scientist’… Insight Analysts work with data to translate the information into something that is constructive to a business. Ultimately assists a business in communicating with their customers effectively. Similar to Digital Analyst.

Marketing Executive
This tends to be a ‘go-to’ for a number of different types of roles, so usually this calls for a quick skim over the job description, but this role could be anything from planning marketing campaigns, writing copy, writing basic HTML, to assisting on photoshoots!

Media Manager
Manages the media marketing campaigns, develops relevant content topics, manages all other content creation and may oversee a small team. Could be working with a number of different types of media – film, photos, animation, illustrations…

Online Merchandiser
An Online Merchandiser supports various phases in the customer journey, from orientation to transaction. Will often work with SEO experts, CRO specialists and the marketing team.

Paid Social Media Executive
Assists with all the paid advertising for a company. Might manage the budget for specific projects, as well as reporting on the success of a particular campaign. Ideal for someone who is capable with figures and data analysis.

PHP Developer
A PHP Developer manages the back-end services of a website, and focuses on the exchange of data between the server and the users. Required to build efficient PHP modules and integrate data storage solutions. (Note: If you are sat there wondering what PHP is, you definitely cannot do this job! If you know, you know.)

Public Relations (PR) Account Executive
A PR Account Executive usually works for a PR Agency, often handling a number of different client accounts at any given time. Might work on B2B or B2C campaigns, depending on the agency. Might involve press releases, product placement and/or new items.

Product Marketing Executive
This role calls for market research on new products, establishing timescales for products in development, influencing pricing and packaging and working with the sales team.

Focus is to manage an organisations social media strategy, in order to boost brand awareness and increase customer and client engagement. Can sometimes be combined with other marketing and communications responsibilities.

Website Specialist / Web Designer / Web Developer
We have seen a number of different names for this one (…Web Architect?) but ultimately, all of these are roles which combine technical expertise with creative talent to create attractive and functional websites for clients.
